Cameron and Josh's wedding at Wadsworth Mansion ran as a double-page spread in the latest issue of Elle Japan. The shot on the right is one of my favorites from this entire year. The original picture is square, but even with this crop I love the way the trees frame the couple. There is such a sincere tenderness in Josh's gesture as he balances Cameron's hand and helps her up the steps.
This shot was taken with my antique Rolleiflex with Color 400 speed film.

I recently had the great pleasure of photographing the wedding of a bride who was in my tennis camp when she was a kid! She was ten, and a phenomenal tennis player. She and her new husband actually bonded on the tennis court, getting to know each other through tennis!
Here she is on her way to the church on her wedding day. Shot in black and white, 3200 ISO, exposing for the interior light. I love the drama created by the contrast between the bright outside and the dark foyer.

Southern Weddings has just put out Volume IV of their beautiful magazine, and they have included this lovely cake shot of mine from Cameron and Josh's wedding. What a gorgeous magazine this is! It's reminiscent of the annual Real Weddings bible that used to come out and is no longer. Southern Weddings has just enough of the traditional without going too far. They're maintaining a classic look but with all of the fresh details that we love.

It's not all about the solitaire anymore! Women are going a bit more adventurous with their engagement rings- star sapphires, emeralds, and brown diamonds! I loved photographing all of these gorgeous gemstones. I used a combination of natural and artificial light to give it a soft and feminine feel while still making all the stones look super sparkly and amazing.

The first two weddings that I shot this past year were at the New York Yacht Club in Newport, and then the New York Yacht Club in New York City! I had the opportunity to photograph inside of two very elite old clubs, both filled with antiques, vintage books, and valuable art. Coincidentally, I was able to get a shot from each of those two weddings into the September issue of Town and Country. Both were beautiful in their own way. Here are a few pictures from each, as well as the spreads from T&C.

It was such an enormous pleasure to shoot the wedding of one of my best friends and longtime colleague, Kate Glum, now Kate Davis! Kate and Drew were married on the Cape! Kate incorporated all kinds of Cape Cod themed elements into the design of her wedding- from seashells on the table to her turquoise and magenta color scheme, everything was designed to a tee. I especially loved her fondant cake with blue waves cresting along each tier. See the feature in the September issue of Brides Boston as well as some more of my favorites!

Last summer, I shot a wedding at a beautiful place called "Flying Carrot Ranch" in Colorado. The bride very cleverly used real-just-out-of-the-ground carrots for decoration, and had them strewn about the property. Here they are piled-up in a wheelbarrow. Brings such a sense of humor and lightness to the decor! And can you tell how huge some of them are?!

Colorado Wedding

Two of the four images in the latest Brides are from an absolutely incredible wedding in Colorado that I shot this past year. It was my first trip to Colorado, and I'm dying to go back. No one told me, though, that in the middle of the summer there it rains every day at about 4 o'clock, and it rained through the entire ceremony! I used my only non-electronic camera- an antique Rolleiflex, but it gave me my favorite shot of the day!

Anytime I'm shooting a portrait of a couple, I have to remind myself to go in close, and to go far away. I shoot with mostly longer lenses, so I've actually run fifty feet in the other direction to get this shot. But I'm also leaving them alone. And I'm giving them a moment. And you can tell.

On this wonderful wedding day, the groom had left his wedding shoes in the taxi, along with the marriage license! I love this photograph, because despite all of the chaos and stress, the couple was completely consumed by one another. It is a very quiet and peaceful shot, going in for the kiss, and you want to go in there right with them.

Marisa and David were married at the luxurious Gramercy Park Hotel. The top story dining room is surrounded with windows, so you have the most incredible views of the city. Marisa used antique string lights and a woodsy floral theme to add intimacy to the space. It was the perfect combination of glamour and warmth. The best part, though, was shooting portraits inside of the coveted, "key-access" only Gramercy Park. I had never been inside before! Julia Roberts says hello.

Sarah and Peter's beautiful wedding at Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia! Not only did the editor give us an extra page for the wedding itself, she gave us the last page of the magazine for the "closing" shot.

It's always nice to do evening shots of the couple once the reception has gotten underway! It can be difficult to sneak away, but a bride and groom are always more relaxed once they've said their "i do's" and had a glass of wine!

When the photo editor from Bride's caught a glimpse of Becky and Jim's beautiful wedding cake, he insisted on using the shot for their January issue. Becky's blue and white cake was specifically designed to match the room which housed it, called the Marie Antoinette room at Astor's Beechwood Mansion in Newport. The mansion is exemplary of the Gilded Age, when the wealthy American businessmen were copying the homes of the great monarchs of Europe. Here, the architects were copying the French Rococo style with its soft ivory tones and rich gilding.

Lately I've enjoyed going around to the tables at the end of a wedding and just photographing the mess that is left behind. There is always some sort of evidence of the great time that was had. I love polaroids left on the table and the way candlelight dances through half-drunk wine glasses. Sometimes guests see me styling the table to achieve this, but this time I didn't have to. These were all taken at the same wedding, lit just with available light, shot handheld, and all on the same roll of film.

Here are a few of my own favorites that I wanted to add to the mix!

Margot & Ian met playing utimate frisbee in Boston in the summer of 2005. Margot left shortly thereafter to work in Ethiopia for a year. Several months later, Ian bought a ticket out there to visit her in Addis Ababa and ended up staying, which is where their relationship began. They moved together to D.C. in the summer of 2008, after two years in business school (Margot in California, Ian in Connecticut). The wedding was on Saturday, July 31st, in Keene, New Hampshire, at Stonewall Farm.

I just finished shooting my last wedding of the year, and oh what a year it has been! I shot 18 weddings, I've been published in Marie Claire, Brides, Brides New York, and Town and Country Weddings, featured on 100 Layer Cake and Once Wed, I've shot weddings in Colorado, New Hampshire, the Hamptons, and Cape Cod! Phew! But what a joy it has been!
With each wedding, I feel the happiness of every bride that I photograph. I photographed a section in the Fall/Winter issue of Town and Country called Trends and Traditions. It's full of clever and classic ideas from registry to wedding invites.
We wanted to stick with a cool color palette for these shots, and I think they all hang together beautifully. I always try to give the editors a few options for each shot, so that they can pick which works best. But photojournalists are always surprised at the process of still-life photography. A still-lifer will pick the best angle, and then perfect the elements of a shot, working tirelessly and fussing over the most minute details. It's a much slower-pace than shooting a wedding, but it appeals to the perfectionist in me!

Anytime I've done a portrait of a new baby and a new mom, the mother always says to me "Just crop me out. I'm a mess. I don't want to be in the pictures."
But to me, showing the relationship between the baby and its mother is so much more interesting! I took a few shots before this one - baby Miles propped-up on a pillow, baby Miles lying on the bed, but as soon as Shree came into the shot, I knew that was what I wanted. I said, just hold him, I'll crop you out! wink. wink.;)

I like to think that it's the moments in-between that make my work interesting. Here we were after the ceremony heading to a side yard to take photos of the Bride and Groom. Nothing is really "happening" here, but I love the positions of the bride and grooms bodies, seeing the back of the brides dress, and the beautiful frames on the wall. I love the movement, and I love stairwells.

I've been having so much fun with my Hasselblaad X-pan! It's an antique panoramic camera, and it takes absolutely beautiful pictures! So crisp, great contrast. The lens takes getting used to, though. I've figured-out the trick is to go in CLOSE!

I've learned over the years that some of the same principles which make a great party, also lend to getting great photos of a wedding party! Cram a lot of people into a space that's just a little bit too small for them, add champagne, and voila! You get happiness, interaction, and great energy!

I love photographs that look like paintings. When I first took this shot, I could feel my hand shake a bit, so I took another one with my camera stabilized one of the dock posts. But this one is better- the slight blur brings a softness to the photograph which gives it more mystery and romance.

At every wedding, I'm always looking for a great photo of the couple at the end of the night. I need a shot to finish-out the "story", or to be a closer in the album, and ideally, I want that shot to have some emotional content. This is harder to accomplish than you would think! Frequently, the bride and groom are talking to different groups of people at this point- he's doing shots with his boys, and she's on the dance floor with her girls. But at Violet and David's wedding, I pulled them over to the photobooth at the end of the evening.
I hadn't set-up the photobooth myself, but the photographer running it was nice enough to let me snap a few shots. I just used the modeling light from the Octabank, which gave me a really soft and warm light. It also created that vignetting at the corners, which is really beautiful.
I love these images, and they're the perfect "end of the night" shots. Congratulations, David and Violet!

A Baby Shower!

Brooklyn Heights Wedding

Showing off Brooklyn and New York City was central to this couple's wedding day. They were married at a beautiful church in Brooklyn Heights, with a reception at the movie studio, Steiner Studio, giving their guests a view of the Manhattan skyline. As we all know, weather doesn't always cooperate with our wedding plans; and a rainy, foggy day wasn't exactly what this bride had in mind. But believe it or not, a cloudy day gives very flattering, soft light, and there's something romantic and clever about having umbrellas in photographs!
The bride arrived in style in an old New York Checker cab, and she wore a lovely lace overlay to protect her shoulders from the winter air. Each table was named after a different street in Brooklyn Heights, and the couple was appropriately seated at "Love Lane."

Zanna and Rassi had an absolutely amazing wedding. I had the great fortune of shooting Zanna as she went through the entire planning process- getting her shoes from Christian Louboutin and trying on dresses at Marchesa. The whole event was very Great Gatsby -from Zanna's vintage-inspired dress to the full Swing orchestra at the after-party. For all the details, pick-up the latest Marie Claire and check it out!

Nina and Russell's NY Wedding

My husband and I had the great pleasure of attending a SECOND wedding reception for our good friends Nina and Russell! We felt so fortunate to be included in both the L.A. wedding and the NY party. If only they would move back to New York, life would be perfect!
Nina and Russell had their reception in a converted old brownstone in the West Village. A beautiful staircase circled a hollowed-out center, and you could see up three stories from the ground floor. Each level had little rooms off of the stairs, all eclectically decorated with a mixture of Asian design elements and old Hollywood glamour. The vintage New York postcards were in lieu of a guest book, and guests were asked to write a postcard and stuff it in a vintage mailbox for later viewing. We, of course, chose a postcard of the Williamsburg Bridge.
Nina's dress was a long black gown designed by Monique Lhullier, and her lovely earrings are a vintage item borrowed from her wonderful friend Charlotte.
Congratulations, Nina and Russell! And thank you for another great party! Keep 'em coming!

My husband grew-up on a beautiful farm in DeKalb, Illinois. His uncles and cousin run the farm, raising the cattle as well as growing corn and soybeans. They have the most beautiful land, and the cows are enormous, with funny curls on the top of their heads.

Berkshires Retreat

About two weeks ago I participated in a "Photography Retreat" in the Berkshires. Three photographs who I admire most were our teachers- John Dolan, Phillipe Cheng, and Holger Thoss. Three teachers to only seven students- it was ideal! All of us were wedding professionals, and everyone shared some very inspiring work. I didn't shoot much, but here are a few shots from the weekend. It's always a good idea to wake-up at dawn to get a good photo- but next time I will bring coffee with me.

I recently shot the wedding of an old high school classmate of mine. Kate has been a cheerleader on my behalf for years, referring me to friends to shoot their weddings, and even getting me two fashion accounts. She always told me that when her turn came, she would be calling me! I wanted to be sure to give her the best possible images I could to thank her for how she has supported me over the last several years.
It was a beautiful country wedding, and the weather was perfect. A crisp fall day full of yellows and reds, but just warm enough to be outdoors in a strapless dress. Kate and Brady were married at our high school chapel (same as my husband and I were just a few months before) and it was beautiful.

It's nice to do a family portrait in the fall! The leaves, the colors, the sweaters. We had a beautiful, cool day. It's always a challenge with any family portrait to provide my clients with a combination of the formal and informal shots. You need to get the family shot, of course, but what makes my portraits special are the in-between moments. That's why I love this shot of the two kids standing in the door. It recognizes beauty in the everyday, and it shows the inquisitive nature of childhood- being a little bit shy, but wanting to know who that stranger is with the camera.

After this Brooklyn wedding, the bride and groom led their guests out into the rainy streets for some post-wedding partying at a local pub. It made for a romantic departure shot with the streetlights reflecting off of the wet sidewalks and the newlyweds united under their umbrella.

Khosrovi Portrait Station

Always trying to keep it fresh! Here is a slightly different take on the portrait station! Zahra and Ed were married at a beautiful old mansion off of Prospect Park, and they wanted to use the interior architeture of the home as the backdrop for their photobooth. I framed the shots in front of this beautiful built-in bookcase. I love the graphic design of the books and the shelving- a modern background is born out of an antique structure.

Nina and Russell

We had soooooo much fun at Nina and Russell's wedding in L.A.!! Thank you, guys, for throwing such an amazing party! The highlight of it all (other than my toast, of course) was Nina and Russell's first dance, in which they did a five minute choreographed routine filled with booty shakes and Nina's signature "snake" move. It was amazing.

This was the first wedding I'd shot in Philadelphia! I have to say-- it was lovely!
The bride had the most beautiful cake, invitations, the most adorable flower in her hair, and an awesome band on top of it all!

Hendler Wedding

Farm style meets Hollywood glam. This bride was a movie producer and had no trouble putting together a wedding with major "wow" factor. There were wooden farm tables, antique vases on the tables, hors d'oeuvres served on wooden blocks, and stamped menu cards hung from each chair. The bride even wore a vintage headpiece that she had found - the coolest.
The groom is a top chef in L.A. and they had a family-style dinner. Heirloom tomatoes, fresh fish, and a dessert spread filled with pies, smores, and butterscotch. Delicious!

A Portrait that I shot of the artist Eva Zuckerman. Eva's work is a
commentary on the idolization of celebrity. She paints portraits
of the stars that don the covers of People and Us Weekly, representing
them in a comical and garish manner. Above her is a portrait
of Jessica Simpson, looking maniacally happy and with one breast
exposed! Eva's work combines an idyllic, almost Disney-like
illustrative quality with a heavy painting style and powerful use of
color. Her work is beautiful, shocking, and hilarious!
